Vikings draft analysis

4/29/2018

Now that the 2018 NFL Draft has finished, it is time to grade how the Vikings fared in bringing in potential greats.

1st Round, 30th Pick, 30th overall- Mike Hughes, UCF (CB)
I did not completely expect Minnesota to draft a corner in the first round, because the smart choice would have been an o-lineman. But they drafted a corner higher then I thought, but this guy should be great and I think he will fit in just fine in Zimmer's defense.
Grade: B+

2nd Round, 30th Pick, 62nd overall - Brian O'Neill, Pittsburgh (OT)
All signs point that this was a good selection. But they waited just a little long to get a lineman. Overall it should fill a hole in our o-line.
Grade: A-

4th Round, 2nd Pick, 98th overall- Jalyn Holmes, Ohio State (DE)
I didn't think a need was a Defensive End in this draft, but they took one anyway. But, Everson Griffen is getting up there in age. One day we will need a replacement for him.
Grade: B-

5th Round, 20th Pick, 147th overall- Tyler Conklin, Central Michigan (TE)
I really approve of this pick! Tyler might end up being a steal as well which makes it even better! OC John will definitely use him to compose some 2-tight end sets with Kyle Rudolph.
Grade: A

5th Round, 30th Pick, 157th overall- Daniel Carlson, Auburn (K)
This pick is kind of puzzling to me. Yeah we need a new kicker because that really is the only glaring weakness on the entire team but really? Just a reminder; Kai Forbath did resign with the Vikings for one more year. Maybe he will be a wingman? Hopefully this turns out better then Blair Walsh did.
Grade: C+

6th Round, 39th Pick, 198th overall- Colby Gossett, Appalachian State (OG)
Another answer to the o-line problem and I am loving it! Hopefully not another Matt Kalil.
Grade: A

6th Round, 44th Pick, 203rd overall- Ade Aruna, Tulane (DE)
Again, we apparently needed another Defensive End. Like seriously there are just as many defensive picks as offensive picks in this draft for the Vikes, aren't we the #1 defense in the league?
Grade: C+

7th Round, 7th Pick, 225th overall- Devante Downs, California (ILB)
This is another pick on the defense, but one that was warranted to an extent. The interior is the only place on MN's defense the past couple of years that a lot of analysts criticize. So this should help.
Grade: B+

Not a terrible draft for the men in purple. They did fill the problems on the o-line, but yet filled a couple unnecessary positions as well.
Overall Grade: B+

SKOL Vikings!
