Timberwolves Draft Night Recap

11/19/2020

Wow the Wolves had quite a draft night! This was probably the most anticipated draft year for the Wolves for as long as I can remember and they met expectations for the most part.
Lets go over the order of events.

No. 1 Overall Pick - Anthony Edwards (G - Georgia)
I had hoped the Wolves would either draft Edwards or trade the pick for a star. I also said they wouldn't be trading the the number 1 pick unless they were able to get another top 10 pick. So they drafted Anthony Edwards and I couldn't be more excited for both parties! Anthony Edwards may be young, but he has a lot of promise and I am hoping he works out here. We also have potentially a sliver of defense now!

No. 17 Overall Pick - Trade
Gersson Rosas found a way to trade the number 17 pick to Oklahoma City for Ricky Rubio, and the 25th and 28th overall picks! That is some mastery right there.
For the grading of this trade we will have to see how it all works out, but initially it looks quite good. Rubio was always a fan favorite here in Minnesota so when the Wolves host fans again he will be loved as always. He also brings a veteran presence to the team that is desperately needed.

Correction: James Johnson was also included in the trade to Oklahoma City

Via Trade - No. 25th Overall - Trade
The Wolves received the 25th pick from OKC in the trade above. However then the Wolves proceeded to trade the 25 and 33 picks to the New York Knicks for their guard they drafted No. 23 overall. The Knicks drafted G Leandro Bolmaro at No. 23 and he is an international guard from Argentina. Hopefully he works out as this put a big damper on the night for Wolves fans.

Via Trade - No. 28th Overall
At No. 28 overall the Los Angeles Lakers technically selected F Jaden McDaniels, but is immediately sent to the Wolves via 2 trades. Not a bad pick for the Wolves. In my opinion he will fly under the radar, and if he makes any splash it would be a nice surprise.

No. 33 Overall - Trade
See most of my trade notes above. However I particularly don't like how this trade ended up, because the Knicks (and eventually LA Clippers) drafted University of Minnesota center Daniel Oturu. I really wish the Wolves had been able to draft him but we do have that spot filled. He should fit well in LA!

Overall I give the Gersson Rosas team a B+ for this year's draft. Early on they really got me excited, good first pick and great first trade in my opinion. However, later on they kind of dropped the ball a little bit. We will have to see how this year turns out! I have to admit I am more excited about Timberwolves basketball starting in just over a month then I thought I would be.
