It was a great week to be a Bison!!
Football NDSU Football hosted 15th seeded Abilene Christian at the Fargodome on Saturday for the 2024 FCS Second Round game. The Bison started this game in a bad way. While they put the first points on the board in a field goal, they would give up two touchdowns to ACU by the end of the 1st quarter including one that was a 90 yard run. After a field goal in the 2nd quarter by the Wildcats, the Bison finally got their spark in a 100 yard (technically 104 yard) kickoff return touchdown from Jackson Williams! After that it was all NDSU for the majority the game. The Bison would end up adding 31 points to the board before the Wildcats would respond. By that point, NDSU had a two possession lead late in the 3rd quarter. The Bison would tack on another touchdown before ACU scored again. But ACU would throw two picks, one for a Bison touchdown late in the 4th quarter to seal the win for NDSU. While it was a very non-traditional Bison win, it is still a win and NDSU will move on to next weekend. This week, the Bison will host 7th seeded Mercer in the FCS Quarterfinals. The Bears defeated 10th seeded Rhode Island on Saturday in a close 10-7 victory. The game this week will kickoff at 2:00 PM and will be nationally broadcast on ABC. North Dakota State Football is 7-1 in MVFC play and 11-2 overall on the season. Men's Basketball NDSU Men's Basketball alternated road and home games this past week for the Big Sky-Summit challenge. On Wednesday, the Bison visited Weber State for the away portion of the challenge. NDSU would largely control the game and hold on late for a 77-73 win. Then, on Saturday, the Bison would come home to host Northern Colorado for the home portion of the challenge. NDSU would be victorious again, handling the Bears for an 82-70 win. This week, the Bison will briefly hit the road to play Butler on Tuesday at 5:30 PM on FS1. Football NDSU Football went down I-29 on Saturday to play 4th ranked South Dakota in a matchup to determine the MVFC auto-bid for the playoffs. The Bison came out of the tunnel looking very flat, and gave up 14 points to start the first 17 minutes. But in the last 4 minutes of the 2nd quarter, NDSU stormed back and tied the game at 14 all going into halftime. In the 2nd half, USD struck first with a field goal to open a narrow lead. But NDSU would answer with a touchdown drive, taking their first lead of the game. In the 4th quarter, the Bison offense would orchestrate a 20 play, 99 yard, 10 minute drive to attempt to ice the game at an 11 point lead. But USD would cut through the Bison defense to put up 12 points under 3 minutes, including a 25 second drive to win the game with 12 seconds left on the clock. It was an absolute meltdown by the NDSU defense late in the game, that will leave many fans nervous about the playoff games in the near future. The Bison will now be forced to share the conference title with SDSU and USD. Speaking of the playoffs, the selection show was this morning. NDSU is very fortunate to receive the No. 2 overall seed and will get a first round bye again. The Bison will await the result of 15th seeded Abilene Christian vs Northern Arizona. NDSU would fall in the quarterfinal round to 5th seeded Denver in 4 sets. This was a season that left a lot people shaking their heads at what wrong, as NDSU seemed primed for a standout season but it ended up falling flat. Either way - good effort this season ladies and best of luck to the seniors in their future endevours! North Dakota State Volleyball finishes the season 8-8 in Summit League play and 12-14 overall. Men's Basketball NDSU Men's Basketball played two games this week, the first was the conclusion of the three game road trip. The Bison didn't matchup quite well with Southern Illinois and struggled for most of the game. NDSU would fall, 44-69. Then, the Bison came home for a game against Division II Minnesota-Crookston. NDSU struggled again, and was staying right in line with the Eagles for the entire game. The Bison would pull out the victory though, a 67-60 decision. This week, the Bison will head down to Alabama for the three-game Samford Thanksgiving Invitational. They will play Samford on Tuesday at 6:30 PM, West Georgia on Wednesday at 3 PM, and finally Utah Valley on Thanksgiving at 2 PM. All games will be streamed on ESPN+. The Bison would run out to a 28-0 lead before Mo State scored a couple touchdowns to make it interesting before halftime. North Dakota State Women's Basketball is 2-1 overall on the season. Go Bison!! This was kind of a weird week.
Football NDSU Football was off this week and I am sure they enjoyed the time off. This week, the Bison will host the red-hot Missouri State Bears on Saturday at 2:30 PM CT at the Fargodome. North Dakota State Football is 6-0 in MVFC play and 9-1 overall on the season. Soccer NDSU Soccer hosted the semifinals and championship of the 2024 Summit League tournament this past week. Football NDSU Football came home to host former rival, Northern Iowa this Saturday. The rivalry between the two teams isn't what it used to be back towards the beginning of NDSU's tenure as a MVFC member - but the two teams still pack a punch! The Bison got off to a fast start in this one - taking a 28-3 (yikes) lead at the halftime break. NDSU would hit again right out of halftime with a touchdown to bring the deficit to 35-3. But, UNI would fight their way to try to get back in the game. They would score two touchdowns in the 3rd quarter to bring it to a 35-19 game. NDSU would wake back up though and score one more touchdown and keep UNI from scoring any more points to claim a 42-19 victory. This week, the Bison will get their long needed bye week. They will return to host Missouri State in two weeks at the Fargodome. North Dakota State Football is 6-0 MVFC play and 9-1 overall on the season. They watched as South Dakota State defeated South Dakota in double overtime and Oral Roberts defeating Omaha 2-0. The Bison will play the Golden Eagles for the semifinal game. NDSU will finish out 2024 at home, hosting Division III Wisconsin-Stout on the 13th, Western Michigan on the 15th, and CSU Bakersfield on the 23rd. The rest of the calendar is the Summit League conference schedule, ending with the 2025 Summit League tournament on March 5-9, down in Sioux Falls. Should be a fun year!! All home games will be available on WDAY Xtra and the Summit League network this season. All conference away games will also be on the Summit League network again this year. Another great week to be a Bison!
Football NDSU Football took their first ever trip to Murray, Kentucky this past Saturday for a conference battle with the Murray State Racers. The Bison would largely have their way with the Racers for the afternoon. This game was already over before halftime, as NDSU put up 42 points in the first half and only allowed a field goal. The defense for NDSU, which is fairly banged up now after some injuries these last few weeks, had no issue holding back Murray State from the redzone until garbage time in the 4th quarter. Redshirt freshman QB Nathan Hayes also got some valuable field minutes starting late in the 2nd quarter, and he was able to throw two touchdowns. Not a bad day for the Bison, as they would beat the Racers 59-6. This week, the Bison will head back home to host rival Northern Iowa. That game will start at 2:30 PM CT. North Dakota State Football is 5-0 in MVFC play and 8-1 on the season. Soccer NDSU Soccer hosted their final game of the regular season on Sunday when St. Thomas came to town. There was a lot riding on this game for the Bison, as they needed to win to control their tournament destiny. NDSU would emerge victorious in a tight 2-1 decision! The Bison clinched their 3rd ever Summit League regular season title and will be the top seed in the Summit League tournament! Now we head towards the postseason. The Summit League women's soccer tournament's format has been modified the past few seasons, and this year it changes again. Since the tournament now involves the top 6 of the league's 9 teams, there are three rounds. The quarterfinals will involve the 3-6 seeded teams and those games will be hosted at the higher seed's soccer field. The semifinals and championship are to be played at the top seed's field, which will be NDSU's Dacotah Field this year. The Bison get a bye to that semifinal round and will host the winner of the 4/5 Omaha-Oral Roberts game that will be played this Saturday. The semifinals will be played on November 7th, the championship is set for the 10th. North Dakota State Women's Soccer is 6-1-1 in Summit League play and 10-5-3 overall on the season. Volleyball NDSU Volleyball had a busy week, playing 3 games in 7 days. The Bison were able to win the first two games, a 4 set victory in Grand Forks and a 5 set victory hosting the Tommies. On Saturday, the Bison would fall to Omaha in a 4 set decision. This week, will hit the road for a two game trip. On Halloween, NDSU will visit Oral Roberts, and then on Saturday they will play Denver. North Dakota State Volleyball is 5-5 in Summit League play and 9-10 overall on the season. Stay tuned next week for my men's and women's basketball previews!! Go Bison!! It is always a great week to be a Bison, but this one was an especially great week to be a Bison!
Football NDSU Football welcomed in their arch-rival, top-ranked, South Dakota State this Saturday in primetime on ESPN2. The Bison and Jacks would go to war in a rare defensive battle in the series. The first quarter would yield no points, including a missed field goal from SDSU. In the second quarter, NDSU would strike first on a touchdown pass from Cam Miller to RaJa Nelson - SDSU would also find the endzone on a breakaway score from their backup QB Chase Mason as well as a late field goal to put them up before halftime. SDSU did have their extra point blocked. Nelson returned to the lineup for the Bison for the first time in several weeks, his impact would be felt again later on. In the 3rd quarter, neither team was again able to score at all. This time it featured a Bison missed field goal from 45 yards out. In the 4th though, things would change. While the teams exchanged punts for the first half of the quarter, NDSU would get the ball pinned back yet again at their own 8 yard line with around 7:40 remaining. The Bison would go the length of the field and score what would be the game-winning touchdown yet again on a pass from Miller to Nelson! The Fargodome, which had been quite loud all night, just went nuts as RaJa toe-tapped in the yellow endzone with the ball in hand. The game was not over though, as SDSU would get the ball back with around 1:40 remaining in the game and all three timeouts left. The Jacks would move down the field, getting to around the 50. However, Bison LB Logan Kopp had other ideas, as he picked off SDSU QB Mark Gronowski to seal the game for NDSU! After a few kneel downs, NDSU would sprint across the field to grab the Dakota Marker for the first time in 5 years, a sight for sore eyes for many Bison fans - myself included! Most certainly a game for the ages played out on national TV, and one that NDSU fans will not soon forget. The Fargodome had plenty of life for the first time in a long time, lets hope it sticks around! The magnitude of this win for NDSU is absolutely massive, as now the Bison will most certainly be the number 1 team in the country for the first time since October 15, 2022. They also hold a crucial tiebreaker over one of the best teams in the country in SDSU. Playoff ramifications abound of course, but we will discuss those later on in the season. This week, the Bison will head back on the road to play Murray State out in Kentucky for the first time. That game will start at 1 PM CT and will be broadcast locally on WDAY and will be streamed on ESPN+. North Dakota State Football is 4-0 in MVFC play and 7-1 overall on the season. Women's Soccer NDSU Soccer came home for a big weekend dual with SDSU and USD coming to town. On Thursday, the Bison women kicked off the rivalry week against SDSU with long 1-0 win over the Jacks! The lone goal was scored towards the end of the 1st half, and NDSU would not need another one! Then, on Sunday, NDSU hosted USD for another big game. The Bison would come up big in a high-scoring game, a 4-2 victory. These wins put the Bison in the drivers seat and in control of their own destiny as we head into the final week of the regular season. NDSU only has one game left, while SDSU has two left. Omaha also only has one game remaining. If the Bison can defeat St. Thomas on Sunday, then there is no alternate scenario needed and they will clinch the number one seed in the Summit League tournament. However, if SDSU loses either of their last two games, that would also clinch NDSU's top seed berth. This week, the Bison will host St. Thomas on Sunday at 1 PM CT as their final game of the regular season. North Dakota State Women's Soccer is 5-1-1 in Summit League play, and 9-5-3 overall on the season. Volleyball NDSU Volleyball had a rough weekend. They hosted SDSU for the annual green out on Thursday, and fell to the undefeated Jacks in a 3 set sweep. On Saturday, they will travel down to Vermillion and fall yet again, this time in 5 sets. This week, the Bison will play a rare 3 game week, starting with a road trip up to Grand Forks to play UND. On Thursday, NDSU will start a two game homestand with a match against St. Thomas at 7 PM CT. They finish up with a home game against Omaha on Saturday at 1 PM CT. North Dakota State Volleyball is 3-4 in Summit League play and 7-9 overall on the season. Look forward to the men's and women's basketball previews in next week's update! Go Bison!! Yet another great week for the Bison!
Football This week, the Bison football team headed out to Carbondale, Illinois to face off against a depleted Southern Illinois team. The game proved to be tougher than many thought previously, especially with a visibly hobbled Cam Miller at the helm of the offense. Plenty of Bison would leave the field injured, with 3 counted starters on defense leaving the field and not returning. Fortunately for NDSU, the defense stepped up big and only allowed 3 points all day. This allowed the NDSU offense to slowly catch up, and would put up 24 points. It was just a sluggish day for the Bison offense. Fortunately, they won and obviously live to fight again. This week is the big one, all the marbles. The Bison will host SDSU for the Dakota Marker rivalry (116th edition) on Saturday at 7 PM CT and will be broadcast on ESPN2. North Dakota State Football is 3-0 in MVFC play, and 6-1 overall on the season. Women's Soccer NDSU Soccer played at home and on the road this week. They hosted Oral Roberts on Thursday for another league win, 2-1. Unfortunately on Sunday, the Bison fell 1-2 in a loss to Denver. NDSU had previously not lost since September 15th. This week, the Bison will come home for the remainder of the regular season. They will host South Dakota State on Thursday at 6 PM CT, and South Dakota on Sunday at 1 PM CT. The second game will also be broadcast on WDAY Xtra. North Dakota State Women's Soccer is 3-1-1 in Summit League play, and 7-5-3 overall on the season. The game will also be broadcast on WDAY Xtra. On Saturday, NDSU will travel down to Vermillion to play South Dakota at 2 PM CT. North Dakota State Volleyball is 3-2 in Summit League play, and 7-7 overall on the season. Go Bison!! It was a fairly great week for the Bison!!
Football NDSU Football welcomed in their in-state rivals to the north for the 117th matchup in series history. The Bison started fairly fast, putting up two touchdowns in the first quarter. UND would respond right away in the 2nd quarter with a touchdown of their own. After a fumble provoked it, NDSU would score another touchdown. Before halftime, both teams would trade field goals. In the second half, the Bison forced a fumble on UND's first play from scrimmage - and NDSU would take advantage by scoring another touchdown. By now it was 31-10. Late in the 3rd quarter, the Bison were driving again. Cam Miller scrambled out of the pocket and attempted to slide but did so awkwardly and was hammered by a UND linebacker, who was flagged for a late hit. Miller would head to the locker room briefly, before coming back out and having his ankle wrapped and ice applied. From coach's press conference - it sounds like he could have returned if NDSU needed him. But since in his absence, Cole Payton threw a flea-flicker 33-yard score to Mekhi Collins, the Bison were sitting comfortably with a 38-10 lead heading into the 4th quarter. Miller would not return to the field of play. UND would score another touchdown, but that would pretty much do it. The Bison would tack on a 45 yard field goal with 5 minutes left - but NDSU would emerge victorious. This week, the Bison will head back out to Illinois to take on Southern Illinois. Kickoff is at 2 PM CT and will be broadcast on ESPN+. North Dakota State Football is 2-0 in MVFC play and 5-1 overall on the season. Women's Soccer NDSU Soccer played one lone game this week, at our in-state rivals to the north. Despite losing a player due to a red card, the Bison emerged victorious in a 2-1 game. This week, the Bison will return home to host Oral Roberts on Thursday at 6 PM CT. Then they will travel to Denver on Sunday for their final road game of the regular season. That game will start at 1 PM CT. North Dakota State Women's Soccer is 2-0-1 in Summit League play and 6-4-3 overall on the season. Volleyball NDSU Volleyball hosted two conference games this week. They started with Denver on Thursday, which they won in a sweep. On Saturday, they hosted Oral Roberts and fell in a 5 set thriller. This week, the Bison will go back on the road to play Kansas City and Omaha on Thursday and Saturday. North Dakota State Volleyball is 2-1 in Summit League play and 6-6 overall on the season. Go Bison!! |
