Bison Sports Update: January 16th

Its been a while since I updated on the Bison. Lets get started.

Football
Last time that I updated you all on the Bison Football team, they were headed to Frisco, Texas to try for their 10th FCS National Title. Unfortunately it didn't end up like we all had hoped it would. The Bison dropped the title game to SDSU 45-21. NDSU was in the game in the 1st quarter, but the team started making mistakes in the 2nd quarter that cost them the game. NDSU fans can still rest easy knowing that this is still only the 3rd title game NDSU has dropped all time, including their Division 2 days. Its the first FCS title game loss in 10 trips for the Bison.
Nevertheless, its still a good season for NDSU, continuing their streak of playoff appearances and adding more games to the playoff belt. The Bison will return next season when they kickoff against Eastern Washington at US Bank Stadium on September 2, 2023. Until then, Bison Nation.

North Dakota State Football finishes the season with a 12-3 overall record, and a 7-1 record in MVFC play.

Men's Basketball
NDSU Men's Basketball has had some fun since I last recapped their play. The Bison started Summit League play over the Winter Break. They started with two losses on the road, to Western Illinois and St. Thomas. That is NDSU's first loss to the Tommies in the Division I era. Then, the Bison traveled back closer to home in a rivalry matchup with UND in Grand Forks. NDSU dominated that one, winning 71-49. After that the Bison started a two game home stretch with the South Dakota teams. The Bison grinded out a win against South Dakota State, winning 65-59, which is only the 4th win over the Jacks in the last 10 years. After that, the Bison beat the Coyotes 73-61 to advance to 3-2.
Just this past week, NDSU hit the road again. This time they went 2-0 on the trip, beating Denver 90-70, and then Omaha 78-65.
This week, the Bison come home for a crucial two-game stretch, starting with the red-hot Oral Roberts Golden Eagles. ORU is 6-0 in conference play this year, including a 20 point thrashing of South Dakota State. Then on Saturday, the Bison will take on the scrappy Kansas City Roos, who are 3-3 in conference play at the moment of writing this.

North Dakota State Men's Basketball is 8-11 on the season, and 5-2 in Summit League play.

Women's Basketball
NDSU Women's Basketball has also had an enjoyable stretch since I last wrote a recap. They started conference play at home, beating Western Illinois by 24 and St. Thomas by 18. Then they hosted in-state rival UND, and beat them in a close game, 81-76. After that, they hit the road for the first time in conference play. They were blown by in Brookings by SDSU, 94-63. Then they visited the defending champs in Vermillion, and managed to beat the Yotes 79-76.
This past week, NDSU went 2-0 in the brief home stretch, beating Denver on Thursday, 71-43. Then they got past Omaha, 83-71.

This week, the Bison will hit the road again. They will first visit Oral Roberts on Thursday at 7 PM. Then they will head to Kansas City to face off against the Roos on Saturday at 2 PM.

North Dakota State Women's Basketball is 12-5 on the season, and 6-1 in Summit League play.

Its mid-January, so we are also getting ever closer to the Baseball and Softball seasons. You may have noticed I posted their first game date and times on the front page. In a couple weeks, watch out for my season preview for both teams. They will be separate again this year, since the softball team starts a week before the baseball team.

Go Bison!
