Bison Sports Update: May 14th

NDSU Athletics didn't have the greatest week between the two teams.

Softball
This week, the Bison played in Brookings at the Summit League tournament. They started with their first round game against 6th seeded Kansas City on Wednesday. That game ended up getting suspended due to darkness and rain and finished on Thursday morning. NDSU would win that game, 3-0, to move on to the double elimination rounds. The Bison took on 2nd seeded Omaha on Thursday afternoon, but came up well short losing 5-1. Then in the elimination game on Thursday evening, NDSU couldn't quite hold form in a 10-2, 5-inning loss to South Dakota State that eliminated them from the tournament. Omaha would eventually beat South Dakota State to win the tournament.
The Bison finished a season that seemed to be headed in the right direction back in early April. Unfortunately they seemed to lose steam towards the end of the regular season and had difficulty competing in the Summit League tournament for the 3rd year in a row. Even more bad news is that the team will lose five key seniors this coming season, including their top two pitchers. NDSU will have a lot to prove again next season, and will vie for the title they once dominated every year.

North Dakota State Softball finishes the season with a 12-6 record in Summit League play and a 30-21 record overall.

Baseball
NDSU Baseball had a mixed around weekend at home. This week the Bison were scheduled to host Omaha in a three game homestand. Due to lots of rain in the area, and after two rounds of rescheduling, the first game of the series was cancelled. The remaining two games were played as a doubleheader on Sunday. NDSU split that doubleheader; winning the first game 5-0, and losing the second one 3-5.
Next weekend, the Bison will host their final regular season and conference series when South Dakota State comes to town. The action begins on Thursday at 6:30 PM CT. We are closing in on tournament weekend, which the Bison guaranteed a spot in a last weekend. NDSU will host that tournament this year since they won the Summit League regular season title last season. Unfortunately it will be short lived for now, as Oral Roberts has long won this season's regular season title. However, NDSU can wrap up the 2-seed this weekend if they can win at least one game over the Jacks since SDSU is the current 3rd place holder. Both NDSU and SDSU have clinched no worse then the 3 seed in the tournament.

North Dakota State Baseball is 14-6 in Summit League play and 20-27 overall on the season.

Also, a huge congratulations to the NDSU Outdoor Track and Field teams on their spectacular performance at the home Summit League championships meet this past weekend! Great way to return to dominance in that sport, as the women's team has now won 14 of the last 15 championships and the men's team has won the last 13 consecutive championships. Way to go Bison!!

Go Bison!!
