Men's and Women's Basketball Updates with the Regular Season ending

2/21/2020

I will start with the Women's team first, as always ladies first.

NDSU Women's Basketball
Current Overall Record: 8-17
Summit League Record: 5-8

The NDSU women are definitely not having the same season as the men. But they are having a much different season then last year. The Bison have a new head coach who has had varying degrees of success this season depending on who you talk to.
Personally I think the women have won some surprising games this season, this is showing signs of some change. But there is still a lot of work to do.
As it appears currently the Bison don't have much hope to make the NCAA tournament, especially with #20 in the nation South Dakota leading the conference with South Dakota State a close second. But the Bison will make the conference tournament as they are projected a 7 seed in the tournament in Sioux Falls early next month.

NDSU Men's Basketball
Current Overall Record: 20-7
Summit League Record: 11-2

The Bison men have been cruising ever since they lost to South Dakota State in mid-January! After their recent win down in Vermillion, the Bison have won seven straight. Along with that, their free throw shooting is top 15 in the nation, as well as 3-point shooting is top 20 in the nation.

This team is showing lots of improvement even on the NCAA tournament team from last year that went 1-1 in the big dance. Starting point guard Vinnie Shahid is heading for a most certain Summit League player of the year performance as he is leading the conference in points per game (22.4) and 3-points made. Florida center Tyson Ward is also having a strong season with a top 5 performance in rebounds per game and is second on the team in points per game (17.4).

This team has really high hopes for a repeat berth to the NCAA tournament, however anything can happen in the conference tournament in early March.

Speaking of the conference tournament here are the standings heading into the final week of the regular season:
(Only 8 teams play in the Summit League tournament)
1. South Dakota State (21-8, 12-2)
2. North Dakota State (20-7, 11-2)
3. South Dakota (19-10, 9-5)
4. Omaha (14-14, 7-6)
5. Oral Roberts (14-13, 7-7)
6. North Dakota (12-15, 6-7)
7. Purdue Fort Wayne (12-17, 5-9)
8. Western Illinois (5-18, 2-11)
9. Denver (6-22, 2-12)

When the Bison won in South Dakota on Wednesday, they clinched a top-2 seed in the Summit League tournament, which is a great improvement from last year's performance! Last year the Bison men were a 4 seed in the conference and were able to win 3 straight games and went to the NCAA tournament, where they beat NC State in the First Four to enter the Round of 64 where they were beaten by Duke.

However the Bison look like a much better team then last year so if they win the conference tournament it would be fair to expect a 14 or 12 seed this year.

The rest of the slate for both teams is as follows:
Men's Basketball:
2/22: @ North Dakota 2/27: vs. South Dakota State 2/29: vs. Omaha
Women's Basketball:
2/23: @ North Dakota 2/27: vs. South Dakota State 2/29: vs. Omaha

Go Bison!
