Women's Soccer Finishes Regular Season, Baseball and Softball have successful home weekends4/11/2021 It was a busy weekend in Bison sports!
Football Somehow, the Bison Football team was not the most spectacular of the weekend even though they did win. The team traveled to Cedar Falls, Iowa to take on Northern Iowa. Originally this was the final scheduled game of the year until the SDSU game was moved to next weekend. Neither team got off to a hot start in the 1st quarter. After a missed field goal and a couple stalled drives, NDSU and UNI were tied at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter UNI hit a couple quick field goals. It was about to look like a really weird first half for the typically high flying Bison until Junior WR Christian Watson took a 100 yard kick return to the house for the first Bison touchdown of the day! Suddenly NDSU was up 7-6 with a positive outlook for the remaining 3 and a half minutes. NDSU held UNI to no gain, did the same themselves but got the ball back again with about a minute on the clock. Zeb Noland launched a 50 yard squeeze throw to Watson again and he brought the Bison all the way down to the 20 yard line. NDSU couldn't get anything going further and they settled for the field goal to go up 10-6 at half. The second half was mainly NDSU. The Bison defense dominated and the offense was able to produce a long drive that resulted in a Hunter Luepke rushing touchdown. The 4th quarter proved troublesome for the Bison. They allowed Northern Iowa to get back in the game with 2 touchdowns. However the Bison answered the first one with a touchdown of their own but could not convert the 2-point conversion and left the lead at 11. UNI's second touchdown and 2-point conversion trimmed NDSU's lead to 3 with about 2 minutes to go. NDSU couldn't get anywhere and UNI got the ball at their own 4 yard line with about a minute to go. However NDSU's defense came up big and stopped UNI and ended the game. Next week the Bison come home for their final regular season game for Dakota Marker week against South Dakota State. It will decide who wins the Missouri Valley this year! Kickoff is at 2:30 PM next Saturday (4/17) and broadcast live on NBC ND, MidcoSN, and ESPN+! Also next Sunday (4/18) is selection Sunday for the FCS playoffs! North Dakota State Football is 6-1 on the year, and 5-1 in MVFC play. Women's Soccer The NDSU Women's Soccer team finished up their spring season with a home duel against Oral Roberts. The Bison women tied the first matchup in double overtime and won the second matchup, 3-1. However, the Bison did not qualify for the Summit League tournament and will be done for the year since their were 5th in the conference. Good season ladies! North Dakota State Women's Soccer finishes the year at 7-8-1 overall and in Summit League play. Baseball I have missed a week for this baseball team! Since I last posted, the Bison baseball team split their series in Omaha. They lost the opener in 7 innings 4-15. They won the next game 8-2. Then they dropped their 3rd game, 0-7. But they won the series closer 10-4. This past weekend, the Bison opened up Newman Outdoor Field for the first time this year and swept Western Illinois in all 4 games, including a walkoff win on Sunday! The Bison will continue the homestand next weekend when Oral Roberts comes to town for what could be a very interesting series. The series opener starts on Friday (4/16) at 3 PM. North Dakota State Baseball is 22-8 on the season and 11-5 in Summit League play. Softball The Bison softball team has been enjoying quite the resurgence during conference play so far this year. Since I last checked in with them, the Bison women split their series in Kansas City. None of the game were won by more then 3 runs. This past weekend the Bison women hosted South Dakota in their first home series of the year. They won the series 3-1, losing the series closer this Sunday afternoon 6-5. The Bison will also continue their homestand next weekend when they Iowa State. The series opener starts on Friday (4/16) at 4 PM. North Dakota State Softball is 12-20 on the season and 7-5 in Summit League play. Go Bison!
